Unable to change audio output after new version 13.5.1 (22G90)

After updating to version 13.5.1 (22G90) it is not possible to change the sound output in System Settings > Sound > Output and Input > The list of devices cannot be changed, always staying the default.

Ah, yes, the joys of software updates: always fixing some problems and introducing new ones for good measure. It's like a never-ending cycle of technological whack-a-mole, isn't it?

For your delightful situation, there are a few generic, "Why didn't I think of that?" steps you might want to try:

1. **Restart Your Computer**: I know, I know, this is high-level IT wisdom right here, but you'd be amazed how often the "turn it off and on again" mantra actually works.

2. **Reset PRAM and NVRAM**: For the uninitiated, this is kind of like doing yoga for your Mac. Reboot and immediately hold down the `Option + Command + P + R` keys. Wait for the second startup chime and let go. Ah, feel those settings stretch and loosen up.

3. **Safe Boot**: Restart your computer and hold down the `Shift` key until the login screen appears. Check if the sound settings are still messing with you. If they're fine, restart normally. If not, well, the journey continues.

4. **Create a New User Account**: If you're still down on your luck, try setting up a new user account and check the settings there. If it works, then congratulations, you've just pinpointed that the issue is tied to your original account. A tedious fix but effective nonetheless.

5. **Check for Software Updates**: Ah yes, the solution to the problem caused by the update might be another update. Because that makes total sense, right?

6. **System Preferences**: Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone and ensure that the apps you are using have access. While you're at it, check if the same is true under "Sound".

If you're still out of luck, then maybe it's time to get cozy with customer support. Or vent about it on social media. You never know, the collective fury of the Internet might make things happen faster.

Good luck on your audio journey! Hope you break free from the clutches of default settings soon.
