Why are certain documents that I save as a PDF password protected?

Docusigned documents from Transaction Desk are password protected when I save them as a PDF. It started happening randomly about 2 months ago, I don't have the password to open them.

PDFs suddenly needing Password I don't have. No changes made on my part. Sometime this year a change happened where all my PDFs can't be opened, due to needing a password. I didn't change anything. I have no idea what the password is. It's happening with both Preview and Adobe Reader. 1) Simply downloading a fillable PDF and emailing it without ever opening it brings the problem. The download site doesn't encrypt their PDFs, but the person receiving it is dealing with a password issue. If they download the PDF themselves, no problem. 2) I receive PDFs back when the other person downloaded themselves and can open it fine in Preview. Once I update it and save my changes, I can no longer access it without a password I didn't set nor have any idea of. If I duplicate the PDF, I'm not allowed to do that because of the password. I am totally stuck! How do I get back to a world where I didn't deal with encryption and passwords on my PDFs? I can't find any global setting to undo this default security, which I don't need.

Pdf files asking for passwords!! I don’t know if this is some other new apple update/creation or if this is gmails doing but all my pdf files are now locked with a password. I work a job where our hours are put in manually on physical time cards. They’re sending the time card pdf files to everyone’s email and I need to be able to fill it out online, pdf it, and send it back to accounting. I have NEVER created a password for pdf files. And I asked my boss they didn’t lock the files or encrypt them, we all should be able to open them.

Preview is password protecting all my PDF documents I am filling out a form and each time I save it to send it off, it adds a password. I don't know what the password is, I did not set up a password protection on Preview. The computer is new and I had been sent a password protected document. I have tried that password and every password I use and still I cannot get the doc to open. I have filled it out 2 x and it is 19 pages long. Is there currently an error on Safari 16.1 and/or OS Ventura 13.01 or Preview. How can I remove the password in preview? Is there a code or something. Thank you for the help. I have never had this happen before.

It's a bug in Apple's Preview PDF viewer. If you make any change to a password-protected PDF, even a fill-in PDF, and even if the permissions on the PDF authorize that change, the document will be locked forever. So don't do that. You will have to use a 3rd party PDF viewer for these documents.

Two alternative free PDF readers are Adobe Acrobat Reader and Skim
