se 1st gen family setup

Can you use Family Setup with a SE 1st generation watch or does it have to be 2nd generation? Our son does not have his own phone yet but we would like to be able to have him use the Apple Watch so he can call us when needed and we can keep track of him.

Provided it has a cellular capability (red ring on the crown), yes.

Manage a family member’s Apple Watch

1. Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone used to manage the watch.

2. Tap My Watch, tap Family Watches, tap a watch, then tap Done.

When you tap My Watch for a managed watch, you see a variety of settings, including the following:
