Software update to 16.6 broke group messaging and sending pictures to Android users

After upgrading to 16.6, I am now unable to send group message that include an Android user, nor can I send a picture or graphic to Android users. I can send a plain ol' INDIVIDUAL TEXT via SMS to an Android users. My carrier is Verizon. I was able to send group messages and pictures to Android users prior to the software updated, so my issue was caused by the update. I've done the following:

Toggled off/on just about every message setting, including airplane mode.

Toggled off/on messaging settings with my carrier

Network setting reset

Nothing works. So infuriating. Tempted to go back to an android, if an issue is not presented soon. I've been trouble shooting this for days.

Hi gracenaction,

We appreciate you reaching out to us.

We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

Is the issue happening on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or both?

Are you getting an error message?

In the meantime, please check for any carrier updates.

  1. "Make sure that your device is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
  2. Tap Settings > General > About.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install your carrier update."

This doesn't work. In the Settings > General > About section, there is no message about installing any carrier update. So that has nothing to do with the problem.

After installing the security update for iOS 16.6 on my iPhone SE 2nd Generation, I can no longer receive MMS messages from an Android user, but I can send them to myself. I didn't change any of my prior settings before or after installing it, so if the update changed something, you're not disclosing it.

So, what can I do to solve a problem I didn't cause?

Do happen to have Verizon? I ended up having to upgrade my cellular plan to unlimited 5G and get a network booster for my home in order to resolve the issue.

Still don’t know what caused it, but something about the upgrade triggered the issue. Apple doesn’t think it’s on their end since they don’t process SMS or MMS. I suspect it’s a compatibility issue between phone upgrade and carrier. So infuriating to deal with.

No, I have T-Mobile. Strangely, late last night I started to get all those MMS messages that people had tried to send me before. I didn't change anything at all.

But upon further reflection of all the issues, I think it might have something to do with Cellular Data being turned on. It's possible that the update messed that up or turned it off, so you might want to try toggling it Off and then On to see if that does anything.

Glad it was an easy fix for you. When my issue occurred, the solution wasn’t related to a setting, such as turning on cellular data, MMS nor SMS enablement I worked with Apple for a couple hours on the phone and then Verizon for about a week. Tried everything. The only thing that worked was upgrading my plan to unlimited 5G and adding a network booster in my home. Which to me doesn’t really explain the issue, because before the upgrade, I had no issue in my home or out and about with my existing plan or home coverage. It was an infuriating week.
