No longer use old email address and dont know the old apple id. Current one is used for subscriptions, etc.

If its logged in on your iPhone instance, you will need the password to log out.

Not sure, since you have not actually descibed what problem it is that you are trying to resolve.
You just said you wanted to change your Apple ID and password.
Where or when are you getting the "“enter password for apple id” prompt?
Getting a new phone may not resolve this, if the issue is not tied to the device, but to your account usage.
What you are proposing is like getting a new car, because the highway to your job is closed.
If you explain the issue, someone may be able to help you resolve it.
Its possible you have apps that were downloaded to the phone with that old Apple ID, in such cases, the apps are forever tied to the Apple ID, and you would need to delete the affected apps to get rid of the prompt.
Thank you for your efforts. Over the past year I have deleted some apps but still get “enter the password” for an old email address that must have been used for an apple id for some purpose. This happens several times each day and drives me crazy. I have no idea what that password is. My current id is used for other purposes including communicating with this discussion group.
Where is it asking for this? What does the prompt look like?
Can you take a screen shot next time it happens?
Is it asking for the email account password? or for the Apple ID password?
If its asking for the email account password, go to Settings ➜ Mail ➜ Accounts and delete the account you no longer use.
If its asking for the Apple ID password, its probably trying to update an app that is tied to that old Apple ID. Check the available app updates and see if its trying to update some that may be tied to it. If so, start deleting apps one by one until the prompt stops appearing.
Followed instructions per tech memo but got no response/email to new apple id. So sick of getting frequent “enter password for apple id”. Thats years ago.
Once changed, you should receive a verification email to the new address with a code and further instructions.
If you did not receive the code, then make sure the new email was entered correctly.
