Who Are Community Specialists and Why Do They Talk Funny?

Lately (past year or so), while searching for solutions to problems *I* am experiencing, I keep coming up on threads in the Apple Community where a "Community Specialist" has "answered" a question in a very formal/corporate/verbose/we-understand-you're-having-a-problem way. These responses mostly seem to just give links to existing Apple info and don't seem helpful to me.

  • Who are Community Specialists: Apple employees? Super Duper volunteers? AI?
  • Why do they talk so funny "We appreciate you reaching out to us", etc.: Trained/told to talk this way? AI programmed this way?
  • When and why do these Community Specialists sometimes answer questions and sometimes do not?

They are Apple employees and ready to jump in to reply if a question has gone unanswered from us (the volunteers) for 24 hours.

Not sure what makes you say that they "talk funny". They were probably trained. So far, there is no AI here. And we are encouraged to use links to Apple documentation as well. That is probably because we do not represent Apple so we refer you to official documentation.

You are strongly encouraged to ask for further assistance if their initial response doesn’t seems helpful. If they cannot assist you further, they will send you off to Apple Support, who are better equipped to help you.

I find them very polite, so I’m not sure why that’s “funny.” Unless politeness is funny nowadays. 😊

They are real people, and Apple employees. They are also clearly trained to answer user questions in a specific manner. Such as, your question could be one very clearly stated line that has only one meaning:

Why is my monitor showing everything in black and white?

And a community specialist will still confirm/clarify it with:

As I understand it, your monitor is displaying everything it black and white. …
