Mac Pro macOS installation progress issue

Recently, I discovered that some users are encountering difficulties when attempting to reset their Macs to factory settings. In recovery mode, after erasing the disk, the installer indicates a 2-hour or longer installation time for Big Sur, Monterey, or other versions. I personally experienced this issue and would like to share my insights, which might assist those who find themselves in a similar situation. I aimed to avoid creating a USB bootable stick and found a workaround that seemed to be effective.

Here's what helped me initiate the installation process after my computer appeared to be unresponsive:

  1. Power off the computer and follow the steps outlined in the article "Mac startup key combinations – Apple Support (UK)" to access macOS recovery mode.
  2. I wiped the disk and attempted to install Big Sur, but encountered no success as the installation remained stuck at a 2+ hour estimate. I restarted the Mac and returned to recovery mode.
  3. This time, the system tried to download and install Monterey. However, I faced the same problem with an estimated finishing time of 4+ hours. Logs provided little helpful information.
  4. If you're using a Mac Pro, connecting your computer to the router via an Ethernet cable simplifies the process.
  5. After three restarts with the Ethernet cable plugged in, the recovery mode seemed outdated. The only solution was to erase the disk using Mac OS Extended since APFS was unavailable.
  6. In this outdated recovery mode, it became possible to download OS X Mavericks without encountering any issues:

While upgrading to the latest macOS versions will require some time, at least you'll be able to load the operating system. While I don't know the specific reasons behind the installation problems with newer macOS versions, it could be related to network, but I am not sure as my router (WiFi 5 standard) was in the same room with Mac.

Best regards,

" I'm experiencing the exact same issue on both Mac Pros for now. One is a 2012 model with 2 Xeon CPUs and 32GB of RAM "

This machine misses the cutoff point for qualifying to run Big Sur as per Apple Qualifying machines macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers - Apple Support (CA)

To run Big Sur on this specific machine would require using a Technically Illegal Method.

I would not chance doing this as Lawyers can come into play

I've never experienced any longer than about 40 minutes from start to the logon screen.

The process always starts out at 2+ hours, but it also always jumps to 1+ hour in about five minutes. The time progression bar is not accurate and in my usage, since 2015 with "modern" Macs, it never has been.

I would assume older Macs running older OS versions would take longer as they are just not as "fast" as the latest models.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on both Mac Pros for now. One is a 2012 model with 2 Xeon CPUs and 32GB of RAM, and the other is a 2013 (2017 release) model with a 6-Core 3.5GHz processor and 16GB of RAM. It's hard to believe that they don't have enough power to handle the latest internet installations 😀

Interestingly, I've seen similar questions from people with MacBooks from 2019 and onwards. Both Macs were later updated to the latest macOS versions, High Sierra and Monterey.

If we may refresh the user's memory, sadly

And to borrow ( request permission and give create to same ) from @dialabrain " Mid 2012 Mac Pro supports up to macOS 10.14.6 (18G95) with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards."

To achieve a Big Sur or the successor version Monterey is going to require some type of Hacked Version which is off limits on there Forums

“ongoing computer issues“ - what’s that for? Did I mention anywhere that I having it as ongoing issue? I shared my observation on weird problem and one possible way how solve it without using USB stick. This is not me started to add comments related of incompatibility between 2012 Mac and Big Sur macOS which never been mentioned anywhere in the thread.

You mentioned Big Sur in your original (first) posting:
