Lost Offline AirPods Question

So I lost my gen 2 AirPods, in their case and everything. Find My just says no location found. I know there is some type of range limit due to the Bluetooth. But the How To Find article has a line that says "If they do come back online, you get a notification on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac that you use with them." But even in other instances I have never gotten a notification such as this -- so how do I set it up to do that just in case?
