AirPods Max no sound

Frequent reliability problems have emerged over the week or two with my 10 month old AirPods Max. The AirPods appears as an available device and can be selected, however the audio chime that normally indicates that they are connected and functional is not heard. The device has a full charge and no apparent issues with embedded battery exist. Adjusting volume on the iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 16.6), MacBook Pro 14" M2 Max 2023 (Ventura 13.5), or using the headset crown dial does not produce a sound. The 'System Information' utility on MacOS indicates that the AirPods Max are running firmware version E135. At the time of this writing, all software and firmware seems to be up-to-date.

Turning off bluetooth and turning it back on does not help. Rebooting the iPhone and/or Mac does not help. Forgetting and re-pairing the AirPods does not help. Enabling/Disabling automatic connection does not help. Enabling/Disabling automatic head detection does not help. Factory reset on the AirPods does help, but sometimes requires numerous attempts. Unfortunately, the factory reset workaround is only effective for hours or days.

Toggling between Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off modes in the bluetooth settings on the Mac while wearing the AirPods Max has no apparent effect, regardless of whether automatic head detection is enabled. Toggling between Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off modes in the bluetooth settings on the iPhone while wearing the AirPods Max with automatic head detection enabled causes brief message to be displayed indicating that the headset must be worn to enable the feature. Since the headphones were being worn at the time of that message, it's possible that the automatic head detection is not working. This is further supported by anecdotal evidence indicating that the issue only occurs after taking the headset off and putting it back on. Disabling automatic head detection on the iPhone and/or the Mac did not resolve the issue, so I'm left without a remedy except to do frequent factory resets. Two months left on the one year warranty...

P.S. It may be a coincidence, but Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac Pro Edition (v18.3.2) was installed recently. However, disabling sound, microphone, and bluetooth in VM settings did not have an effect, even after reboot.

Hwy metadendrite,

You've done a lot of great troubleshooting steps on your own. Thank you for the detailed break down of what you have tried, including the workarounds you've discovered. The next best step may be to reach out to Apple Support directly for assistance in having them inspected by a technician.
