I want to rename an external drive. I go into Disk Utility, right click the drive name, and for the DATA section of the drive, "rename" works. For the other section "rename" is dimmed.

No, it won't let me rename it on the drive icon. That's the name I want to change.

I think you are right. There is a post in the SuperDuper forum in which Dave Nanian (SuperDuper guru) admits that this is a problem. Curiously, you can't even change the disk name in the comandline with diskutil rename, even as su.
Did you create the external by cloning another drive?
I have seen some indication that has caused problems renaming the System Volume and setting custom icons.
The drive I want to rename IS regularly used by SuperDuper to do cloned backups.
That may have something to do with it then. I rename every startup drive I create. I never clone them.
Well,of course when I first installed the drive, I partitioned it and named it with Disk Utility You're saying just cloning something onto it messes up the nameability somehow? That seems rather odd.
