New router switches between 2.4 and 5, all under the same Wi-Fi name. I have devices/apps which req 2.4.

It’s a Vodafone ultra hub and yes that’s exactly what it does. It has 3 networks - main, premium and guest. Main and guest operate on 2.4 and 5 and the premium on both of those plus 6ghz with no option to split.

I actually solved the problem by spending 12 pounds on a TP link N300 range extender which only operates on 2.4 ghz. WPS onto the router and then connected my iPhone to it and had 5 thermostats working inside of 10 minutes that I’d try to get to work for days before

Here ya go Bob , PC CAN DO. You meant you haven't see a MAC that can do it

  1. n Device Manager, right-click on the Intel card and select Properties
  2. Then click on the Advanced tab.
  3. You will see an option called Wireless mode. Set the mode from 802.11a/b/g to just 802.11b/g.
    • This will prevent the card from scanning or accessing the 5Ghz 802.11a band and just leave you with the 2.4Ghz b/g band to work with.

Check and see if your Wi-Fi router can be set up to provide different names for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Most routers can do this.

If your new router was provided to you by your ISP, your best bet would be to contact the support folks at the ISP to see if this is possible....and if yes, how to change the settings.

If you purchased the router online or from an electronics store, then the router manufacturer's customer support people would be the place to go for help.

What kind of router do you own??????? ANY decent AP/Router should be able to do that with ZERO ISSUES.

and before any basement admin's chime in, take a look at my LinkedIn first..... It's under the same name.

I used to recommend UnIFi but ever since companies started buying out their stock and jacking up prices, and then Ubiquiti doing jack about it. I just can't, don't & won't anymore.

A USG firewall with an U6 lite AP is MSRP under $250 for both. You can't even touch a refurb USG for that right now, just sad. Was nice when you could buy enterprise for your home. I personally think its Ubiquiti as a way to jack up prices while still looking ultra competitive... "Look we still sell our Pro AP's for $160, you can't buy one, but that's not our fault" Sure Ubiquiti, sure.

Anyway I digress, after my last UniFi setup went missing from a moving truck, I purchased a couple Asus Zen AX6600 and have been pretty happy with them. I think they are something like $300 for two and they are full-fledged firewall, router, switch, AP, with all the features you expect and even stuff like failover internet which works via any ether port on the device or the USB. I've tested the USB on my hotspot device and my cell phone sharing its connection and both work.

Not the best thing out, but it did everything I wanted and also does the main thing it should do well, which is wireless. Any of the non-Zen Asus stuff under $300 is complete trash and overpriced. If you're on a super budget go with TP-Link. $ for $ they can't be beat. The stuff around $300 performs well but looks like 0Mg@wdZIMAGAMER3rr$oIMAGAMER$uPPp@IMAGAMER22RGB3zr5 ... so I'll pass.

I feel pretty comfortable recommending the Zen Wifi to anyone from average home user to seasoned vet who wants all the features. It's one device that I haven't gone in and disabled all the advanced features like AV scanning, because its non-intrusive and hasn't made any difference on performance.

Said some phones can be temporarily switched.

That is really interesting. I have yet to see a phone....tablet.....or computer.....that can do this.

Neither the phone nor the computer can pick and choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz when both frequencies are using the same wireless network name.

A router that cannot be set up to provide separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless network names is long out of date. Gosh, even my 10 year old Apple router can do this.
