Trouble creating Smart Playlist

Hi,

Hopefully this is something simple. I'm trying to create a new smart playlist. I have it based on a genre called New Pop. I also added another custom field called comments and any song that has New Pop entered in the comments field would also populate in this playlist. With those 2 criteria set everything works fine. But let's say I want to exclude any music by Meghan Trainor from this list. When I add the last criteria I have highlighted in yellow, then my playlist becomes empty. So I'm obviously not doing something right. Please help!

Thanks in advance.

I have two points to make:

  • The text in your type-in box must not contain any spaces after the text. For example, if either the genre or the comment has an space after the last word, but the actual field does not have that speace, then the result will be an empty list:

  • If I highlight the entire field instead of leaving the cursor in there, I see an extra blue highlight after the "e":

  • the field should look like the two below:

and

Second, I notice that ed's Smart Playlist editor looks different to my Windows version. Perhaps ed is using a Mac (apologies ed, for jumping in).

Your editor looks like mine and I am unable to recreate ed's exactly; I cannot remove the Music drop-down option. So my reason for posting is that ed's proposed layout does not work or you cannot achieve it, I suggest that you remove the comment filed to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you can then work out why it's a problem.

Thank you Ed and Fiend. Ed, your rules work explicitly in my case. Thank you. I know for some, the simple solution is to delete the Meghan Trainor tracks from the library, but I have a special playlist for just her music that I didn't want included in New Pop. Anyway, thanks to you both again. I've attached a new screenshot of my rules.

Best regards,

Ksk8

Hi Fiend,

Your sharp eye is correct; my screenshot was done on a Mac. For unknown reasons, smart playlists, especially ones with nested rules, look different between the 2 environments.

Ksk8shines original post states

" I have it based on a genre called New Pop. I also added another custom field called comments and any song that has New Pop entered in the comments field would also populate in this playlist."

To do that you need the Genre rule and the Comments rule connected by a "match any."

Excluding the Meghan Trainor tracks from the list requires a separate rule, although one would be tempted to just delete them from the library. :-)

Your point about the handling of spaces is a great one. OP can go ahead and try it out. One good thing about smart playlists is that you can experiment to your heart's content. One tweak and the results may change from 3000 lines to empty, or vice versa, but it in no way affects your library.
