mail program issue

MAIL program sometimes inadvertently will not send a message. I turned off the delayed send, in the preferences, and that didn't seems to work. The message that pops up, after multiple messages were sent, is CANNOT SEND MESSAGE... "The attempt to read data from the server failed." The crazy things is... I am successfully able to send emails from any address in mail, and this message pops up every so often for no reason whatsoever. When I Close the Mail program and then open it back up, and then send that same email, it works. I have to continue to shut down the mail, during the day, at various times, because this message pops up every so often, which is annoying. This issue was never a problem on any other MacBook Pro that I used in the past. How can I fix this?
