After my iphone 6 updated to 16.6 my app icons for messages and messenger have disappeared from my "desk top" ie phone icon, firefox icon. I can access my messages and messenger text by going to App store. I would like to see the messages and messenger texts with just one click.

If you can’t find your apps, you can either drag them all back to where you want from the app library as was mentioned above, or can reset your home screen to remove all folders and all customizations.
I’m also unsure about the configuration here, as your footer references macOS, and your title references an iPhone 6 running iOS 16.6 and that’s not supported.

Swipe all the way to the right to get to the App Library, find the missing icons, put your finger on it and drag it back to your homescreen.
