im trying to restart my macair from factory and i think i may have hit a speed bump. i was instructed to erase the disk to reinstall and now i am stuck with it saying it cant contact the server

Seems you are trying Internet recovery. If you can't because of old macOS you try to install, you should contact Apple Support or take your MacBook Air to your local retail AppleStore, Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be install macOS there. As far As I know, it's free.
