Depends on the specific requirements of the data science and machine learning environments. These are huge domains. For example, if your specific needs include Windows only apps then it does not matter how much RAM or storage your Mac has. Determine the specific requirements you need then buy the computer that meets those requirements.

Always buy as much RAM and storage as you can afford to future proof your machine with regard to future work load increases and the like.

My advice is to ask those already in the program and determine what they feel is sufficient.
