difficulty pairing AirPods max since last updates

For the past few days my AirPods Max have had difficulting pairing with my iPod, iPhone and MacBook. It will no longer switch between the devices and if the connection is cut for any reason, like sleeping, I have to re-pair to the devices. It is a 5-10 minute process because pairing doesn't work first few times! What happened. I assume the last updates created this problem as I am not the only one in my family that has this issue now.
