Syncing my Google calendars with iCal stopped working

I have two Google accounts, each with multiple calendars. For years I've accessed the calendars through the Calendar app on my computer. I've been able to add events, edit, etc., with no problem.

Suddenly iCal will not synchronize with either Google calendar. First the calendars stopped syncing, and then when I turned off the accounts to force it to resync, they disappeared. I don't think I've anything on the computer to prompt this change.

Now in iCal, I see the names of the Google accounts (myname@domain.com, etc.), but no actual calendars and no content. I can't click on them. If I go into Calendar/Settings/Account/Delegation and click on an account, I see the message "The server doesn't support delegation for this account." Nothing is clickable. The thing is that I use these calendars in the exact same way on a second computer, and I don't get that error message there and it's still working (knock wood).

Specs: Mac Book Pro, Ventura 13.4.1, Calendar app 13.0 (2932.5.2).

What I've tried:

  • Turning the accounts on and off (in Settings/Internet accounts)
  • Deleting the accounts and re-adding them
  • Forcing a refresh in the calendar app
  • Removing Calendar files from my Library in the hopes that would prompt the system to restart, and no dice.
  • Going to a specific page in my Google account to ensure the files are syncing.

Advice welcome! This is a real hassle.

Hi joannap,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. You've done an excellent job with the steps that were performed. To further isolate this behavior, we recommend to update your Mac to macOS Ventura 13.5. Having the latest macOS version helps provide software improvements that may help in this situation.

In addition, if you have a third party security software and a VPN network enabled on your Mac, you'll want to disabled these two features and test your Google account in the Calendar app on your Mac to see if it syncs your calendar events.

To update your Mac, you can follow these steps:

Use Software Update
To check for new software, open Software Update. It's in System Settings (or System Preferences), which you can open from the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:

* Choose Apple menu  > System Settings. Click General on the left side of the System Settings window, then click Software Update on the right.

* Or choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

If Software Update finds new software, click the button to install it. You will be asked to enter your administrator password. During installation, your Mac might show a progress bar or blank screen several times, and you should avoid putting it to sleep or closing its lid.

If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac.

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Best regards.
