Subtitles on Apple TV

Hi. I’ve got an iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I’ve been trying to get subtitles on a TV Show I’m watching (FBI International), as I’m hard of hearing.

I’ve tried following the instructions I’ve found online (going to settings > accessibility > hearing > subtitles and captioning > closed captions and SDH and turning it on).

So far everything I’ve tried hasn’t worked.

Is it just the TV show that won’t accept subtitles because it’s a TV show that features different languages or is it something to do with my phone?

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Subtitles and closed captions are not the same. Turning on closed captions as default is only effective for new videos from that moment on (I suggest to restart the app), and only for content that has closed captions embedded in the stream. Content may have one, or the other, or both, or neither; it depends mostly on the content provider.

To see what is available in the stream, pause the stream, then use the on-screen controls for subtitle and captions (combined under ‘Subtitles’). It may be slightly different in how it is presented, and where to click, for iOS 12.x versus for iOS 16.x. Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app or iTunes Store - Apple Support. On iPhone, choices for subtitle language in the Apple TV app, are remembered as a new default from that moment on, to be used when available in the stream, but the CC attribute will be ignored if not set in Accessibility.
