I have a MacBook Air 2014 and an iPhone 8. How can I get them to sync, so that they share space on iCloud?

I got warnings on my MacBook that my iCloud space was getting to the limit. I purchased the smallest amount and that is good.

However, my iPhone 8 keeps wanting me to add more iCloud space. I assumed that they would share the space.

I don't know how to get them to share.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.7

No. Family Sharing works across different Apple IDs. Precisely if you have 2 Apple IDs, Family sharing is the easiest option for you to share iCloud storage but maintain the email separate.

click here ➜ Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

This will let you keep everything as it is, and just share the Storage space for iCloud. You won't see the files and data stored by one device on iCloud on the other device however, but they will share the storage space.

I assumed that they would share the space.

I don't know how to get them to share.

Yes, that's the same as putting your car and your bike in your garage.

You share iCloud+ plan for your Mac and iPhone.

See the following Apple articles:

What is iCloud+? -> What is iCloud+? – Apple Support (UK)

Check your iCloud storage online or on any device

If you have upgraded iCloud storage, once your request for iCloud+ has been activated, you should receive an invoice in your email box.

Then check -> Go to -> Settings -> your name -> iCloud -> if you see 50 GB (or 200 GB or 2 TB) then you have an iCloud subscription.

If you have an iCloud subscription, you will receive a monthly bill from Apple, check your email box.

Use the same Apple ID.

They would both need to be logged in to the same Apple ID for iCloud to share the space or be part of a Family Sharing group if they are using different Apple IDs.

Are they using the same Apple ID? Or a different one?

On the Mac go to System Preferences ➜ Apple ID,

On the iPhone go to Settings ➜ Apple ID.

The email address there must match to directly share the space.

They don't match. I have a different email address for the phone, so I don't get so much junk mail. Can I can change the Apple ID address just to get the iCloud space for both?

Sharing is based on the Apple ID.

If you are using two different Apple IDs, you are two different iCloud environments, two different notification settings, two different domains for authentication and iCloud keychain, two different everything.

There is no means to combine two Apple IDs, though Family Sharing can be used to pool iCloud storage. Family Sharing does not pool iCloud storage access.

Spam is based on the sale and re-sale of email addresses, and particularly on those email addresses that are willing to interact with the spammers.

To get what you want, you will need to establish Family Sharing—which, again, pools storage quotas but does not allow access to the data of other family members—or to migrate and merge Apple IDs, which is a tedious process. And purchases and subscriptions cannot be migrated.

Thank you for replying to my question. I've really complicated things, haven't I! So is there a simple explanation as to how I can establish Family Sharing?

You've create an environment more complex than probably necessary with what is a poor strategy against spam, yes.

As for setting up Family Sharing, pick which account you really want to use, and use that as the organizer to set up Family Sharing: Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

Family Sharing allows the creation of a pool of resources and capabilities for up to six Apple IDs.

I'd probably start to migrate to one Apple ID though, as the multiple Apple ID mess only gets bigger over time, particularly if purchases and subscriptions and such continue across the IDs. Pick which ID you want to use as your primary, and set it up to receive mail from the secondary, and use Family Sharing until you replace or retire all the stuff associated with the secondary.

You will find things work better and more consistently and wiuth less effort using a common Apple ID across all of your Apple devices, as well.
