remove initial circles in messages

I'm trying to remove the initial circles in messages including the indexing. I feel very clumsy it must b e simple. I'm don't know how got there but I can't get out that sidebar, remove them, stop the indexing. I can't think of a good reason to have them. I simply started a name and it suggested a contact.How do I stop this nonsense?
