Can I extend an Apple Care + which I didn't pay for and is attached to my mac? I bought it from a third party

Hello guys. Is there a way for me to extend an apple care + (already paid in full till 2025) even if I was not the one who originally purchased it? Apple says yes it's possible but it must be transferred to the new owner, problem is the third party shop has no way to trace the previous owner of the device to ask to do this transfer. I wonder if with my apple ID I can do it without going into this process. I know I can have it repaired with the current warranty but when it comes to renewing the subscription, apple seems like it needs to be done using the original apple ID (I believe) or the name of the original owner. I don't see the logic, you can have it repaired for free with the apple warranty which is now yours, but you can't renew it because it's originally not yours. Really appreciate if you can help.

thanks for the advice. I was told that there's no way to transfer the ownership to me if there's no proof of purchase. Transfer of the apple care + ownership is a must if there's monthly or yearly subscription currently active.

In my case, since transfer is impossible, I was advised to just wait until it expires (or just before it expires) and I should receive an apple notification asking whether I want to extend the warranty or not. So from there I can extend it using my apple ID (I hope). But I have to wait until 2025 🤣 to see if it works.

Please read Extend your AppleCare+ coverage - Apple Support.

  • You can also find the expiration date in the Proof of Coverage or Plan Confirmation message that is sent to you when you purchase the AppleCare+ plan.

If you are unable to determine that plan's original purchaser then you will not have that email.

That's all any of your fellow Mac users can possibly know.

Thanks a lot bro. Sadly there's no way to trace the previous owner. The shop told me that they can't. So there's really nothing I can do about it.

Do you know by chance (cause I can't still know for now), if when the plan is about to expire, it gives you the possibility to extend online without asking for the original receipt? I mean I can see the plan just by going to my apple ID as it's attached to the serial number.

Thanks

Well, they must have changed their policies; I transferred an Applecare plan (as a buyer), but I did have a bill of sale from the seller with both our names/addresses on it as well as the serial number, etc.

In any case, the Applecare plan has always been attached to the serial number of the device, not a person (unless they changed that too), so you should be able to use it if a repair is necessary.
