Apple Mail and SMTP/IMAP autodiscovery

What mechanisms exist in 2023 to perform SMTP and IMAP autodiscovery for Apple Mail?

Most specifically, when you add a new "other mail account" and you're asked for an email address and password, and Apple Mail does some kind of automated lookup which fails because it is not set up correctly. I would like to have this succeed because it is set up correctly.

Does anyone know?

Note: key words above are SMTP and IMAP, not exchange, but would be keen to learn whether it is possible to set up SMTP and IMAP using the exchange mechanism.

The problem is some IMAP hosts use non-standard ports on their servers, or non-standard naming of their servers.

I may have my own domain name, but still have to use the server name of my host for incoming and outgoing servers because of how they setup their Linux servers. Contact your email host or lookup your settings on their help page.
