Start with the easy potential fixes, make sure your AirPods are clean and the microphones not obstructed.

When you have done that, make sure your Airpods are connected to your iPhone. Put your Airpods in your ears and test the microphone by asking Siri a question. "Hey Siri, what is the time?"
If the microphones don't work after this test,
Delete the Airpods from your iPhone (Forget the pairing) in Settings/Bluetooth (select the AirPods). Then pair again and test.

If it still is not fixed after all that, contact Apple Support and arrange to get the AirPods checked by Apple.
