Cannot update to 16.5.1 security update (c) "This update requires a Wifi network connection to download."

I cannot update to 16.5.1 security update (c) on my iPhone 11 Pro.

"This update requires a Wifi network connection to download." Will not go away.

I have strong Wi-Fi signal. I have rebooted. I have turned all services off and back on, cellular, Wi-Fi, BT. I have messed with toggling Cellular Data and Wi-Fi assist. I cannot try a different Wi-Fi network as of right now, but I should not have to. I tried plugging it into my MBP that is on the same Wi-Fi network but it would not pull up the 16.5.1 security update (c). It just kept telling me the iPhone was up to date with 16.5.1.

I have tried everything I can think of and still nothing. So frustrating.

Updating an iPhone:

Try Ethernet and a Computer:

Try hooking this up to a computer once more. Then, connect to Ethernet. If you have no Ethernet port, then use this adapter: The Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple

Sorry, it didn't help. I have NEVER had an issue updating any Apple device I've every owned. This is NOT a widespread issue. If it was, this forum would be bubbling over with user complaints, but it's simply not.

Did you by any chance reboot your router? Maybe forget your Wifi and then reconnect. There are a LOT of variables when dealing with routers in the wild. And Apple doesn't control, nor design them. Maybe try a simple Forced Restart of your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

If nothing helps, then I'd recommend you reach out to Apple for help directly. If you're in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE.

Thank you for the reply. I am not sure why this would work, but I get it. This is the Apple way of doing things now. Just keep trying random configuration changes until something works. Maybe, just maybe, if Apple would stop generating "New and Exciting Features" and focus on fixing bugs in their systems we wouldn't have to constantly do the "try this" dance. The next versions of iOS and MacOS need to be contemporary version of Snow Leopard. A bug fix OS. A stability update across the different platforms and apps, because "it just works" no longer holds true.

OK. Good suggestion. I do have a VPN installed from my previous employer. I can delete it and go from there. However, with this said, I have never had this issue before with the VPN installed.

Now touching back on my earlier rant, this is a known issue for Apple. There are multiple websites and youtube video dedicating to workarounds and fixes for this issue. So obviously this is something that Apple should be dedicated to permanently fixing. Especially when it comes to something obstructs security updates.

Edit: Did not help.

You are welcome.

It’s a workaround. If WiFi is not working, then plug your computer into Ethernet while performing the update. If there is no Ethernet port, then this would not be an option for you. You might want to try a different network, too.

Don’t be rude. This is just a user-to-user forum. We are not Apple. I’m just making suggestions, to help you find an answer, and that’s how you are seeing these forums. And I’ll leave it at that.
