Apple Mail and Microsoft Exchange Accounts

I have the same problem that this question was created by "chicagoturgy" at Jan 15, 2023 2:41 PM, but that one was already closed unfortunately:

I use Apple Mail (v 16.0) on my 2015 mid macbook pro running Monterey 12.6.6 to collect the mail on all of my accounts. I have no problem with my work accounts that use gmail. But I have an othe exchange365 account accounts and for the past couple of weeks I have problems when I move an email from the accounts that are microsoft outlook-based into my mail folders for storage (organized in a variety of folders under my local folders). As long as I keep the email in my inbox I can see them, reply to them, etc. But once I move them, I can no long read them, except the title in the list. (Even raw source is missing.) The emails are 'there' (because I can read the title in the list) but they are empty. If I try to move them back to my inbox they remain empty. Any suggestions beyond deleting and rebuilding (which I have tried to no success).

An other info: Mails are not deleted from the exchange account, when I move them into my local ("On My Mac") folder

I couldn't find solution on the net for days ago. :-(

Bit of a longshot...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Manually Rebuilding Spotlight via Terminal

If the aforementioned Spotlight control panel approach doesn’t spur a reindexation of the drive, you may need to initiate it manually through the command line. Open Terminal and use the following command string to do so:

sudo mdutil -E /

This basically asks for temporary super user status, which is why Terminal may ask you for your password (it may not if you’ve used a sudo command recently or are already logged in as a super user or root. The command asks the unix tool mdutil to reindex the spotlight database for everything on the computer, including external drives, mounted disk images, etc. To re-index only for a specific drive, use the /Volumes path. For example, for an external drive named “MiniMe,” the command would look like this:

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.

If still need be…

Open Terminal and run each of these one at a time

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

killall Dock

sudo mdutil -E /

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.

Thanks BDAqua, but it should be something else then Spotlight.

If I remove my exchange account from mac Mail and I add it back, everything seems OK for several minutes. But in the background Mail starts to sync mails with exchange server, and once something happens, and after that I've got the same error: After that point, it seems, it is not possible to remove any message from the exchange server. However the head of the mail is moved but only in the Mail app. On the exchange server - using online client - is nothing changed. :-(

I moved all my mails on the exchange server to an other mailbox, but it doesn't matter. So probably I have to export these, and import to my mac into a new folder, and I will see... ?

I've found the problem should be somewhere in the sync process of mac Mail and Exchange server, and probably handling of attachments. I detach my exchange mailbox from the mac Mail. Then I moved all may mails in the exchange inbox to the "official" archive mailbox - using the exchange webmail. Then I attached back tha mailbox to mac Mail with modified the account setting "Download attachment" to "None".

Now almost everything seems to be all right several days ago. (But - of course - I find all previous mails in the Archive mailbox, if I need something from the past...)

"Almost" I mean, if a I flag a mail in mac Mail, it is not synced with the server :-(

Anybody has idea, how to solve it?
