Do I need a 2FA app? I have been using Jumbo and they ceased operations. Their instructions are to download an app to obtain access to my codes. Wouldn't I be in the same situation again if that app ceases operations? I paid Jumbo for a year membership and I'm out that money as well. Thanks for the guidance and education.

That depends on what kind of services you need to log into. You don't need one for Apple. But, you may need one for other things. I used to need one for the VPN at my old job. Now, I need one to log into any of my university's non-public pages, including my email. I also need one for login.gov which gets me into certain government sites.
But, you don't need to pay for one. I'm currently using Duo (because it was what my last job had me use). Other options are Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator. They are also free.
Some sites will also allow you to opt to have codes sent via SMS. This is not, as I understand it, as secure.
In terms of Apple's 2FA, you are only sent a code when you log in on a device Apple has not seen before. Generally you will not need codes all that often.
