You might be able to find it from the serial number and a lot of work, but there are easier ways.

If the iPod is working, go into Settings/General/About>Capacity, which will tell you the iPod's capacity. Although that figure is the capacity of the iPod, the actual amount of storage will be lower because of the way that storage is calculated and the space used by the operating system. In the About menu should also be a Settings/General/About>Available entry, which will show you how much room remains on the iPod.

If you can connect the iPod to iTunes, the iTunes window when looking at the iPod will tell you how much room it has. The picture below is of an older iPod Touch, but the basics are the same for most iPod Touch models:

In the picture above:

• Capacity is the storage available for the user, so adding a bit extra, I conclude that this iPod is a 16GB model
• the multi-coloured bottom bar shows you how much storage is being used by each specific type of media. If you hover your mouse over a coloured area, the added detail pops up (Photos 116.5MB 109 photos)
• 3.86GB Free is space that you can use
• Other indicates space that cannot currently be used. There will always be some Other, but if that section is larger than you feel is reasonable (in this case, it's probably not too large) then a Sync of the iPod with iTunes should fix that
