Connecting my wife’s iPad to a TV

I have a HDMI cable and a lightening adaptor that when I hook it directly to my iPhone it works however when I hook it to my wife’s iPad nothing. I see videos telling me to go to settings on my iPad then select Display & Brightness then select display but that is not an option.

She has a 5th generation with iPad OS 16.2.

We are on vacation so any help would be appreciated.

If that TV/Screen supports Apple Airplay, that could be an option.

  1. Plug a Lightning Digital AV Adapter or Lightning to VGA Adapter into the charging port on iPad.
  2. Connect an HDMI or VGA cable to the adapter.
  3. Connect the other end of the HDMI or VGA cable to the display, TV, or projector.
  4. If necessary, switch to the correct video source on the display, TV, or projector. If you need help, see the manual that came with your display.

But if you are using a direct connection using Apple's adqpter and an HDMI cable then this should work after updating your iPad to the latest iPadOS 16.5.1.

iPadOS 16.5.1 solves all Apple TV adqpter issues.

After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset/forced restart of your Apple mobile device.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

If still no joy with the adapter and HDMI cable, try plugging your iPad's charging cable into that adapter and plugging that cable into your iPad charging adapter block plugged into mains power outlet.

Best of Luck to You!

There are NO settings to do this!

The Display and Brightness settings is NOT for this feature.

You plug the adapter into your iPad, plug the HDMI into the adapter, if you have a good connection, a green bar should appear at the top of your iPad and the iPad's screen should be mirror’ed to the TV.

You may have to use the the additional Lightning port on the adapter to plug your charging cable into the adpter and into mains power, to power the adapter, to get the iPad to mirror to your TV.

Another “trick” you can try, if all of this is a fail, leave the adapter and all cables and power/charging cords attached and do another hard reset of your iPad.

Good Luck!

When connecting your iPad to a TV/monitor using HDMI, make all connections between the Lightning to HDMI Adapter and TV before finally connecting the HDMI Adapter to your iPad.

If the TV itself is not detected when the HDMI Adapter is connected to your iPad, the HDCP handshake may fail. The HDCP handshake will often run once - when the Adapter is connected to the iPad.

The adapter sometimes needs more power to use on an iPad than on an iPhone.

So, the adapter may need the additional power from being plugged into power to provide enough power to the iPad and to the adapter to mirror the iPad to the TV.

Also, I forgot to ask this one crucial question.

Is this adapter an Apple branded adapter or a third party adapter purchased elsewhere?

In most instances, third party made adapters, usually, will NOT work.

You need to have/purchased the genuine Apple adapter.
