My messages app on iPhone does not show the correct number of unread messages, even when no filter is applied and unread filter shows zero. Still shows 7 unread, but they do not appear.

I have had that happen to me. The problem was corrected by closing the App and Restarting the iPhone.
I have the same issue with 50 more ghost badges on iphone. The way I solve is to open all my devices that share the same apple ID, go in to the message setting and make sure all devices are with message all read and synced to the apple server. Especially in the Mac OS, make sure the "preference -> imessage -> settings -> Enable message in icloud" is ticked to sync all message. After that the iphone message ghost badges when down to about 10 left. The rest I clear it with Siri "read message". I hope this method help you guys.
I recently switched from being a long-time Android user to Apple.
Why hasn't Apple addressed this issue in their patch releases? I've attempted all the suggestions, but none seem to work.

when I did this I found that most messages where ones that I flagged as junk or silenced - that might be how this glitch happened in my case…
yeah. like man has 4 but i dont see the regular blue dots besides the messages so.
