iCloud drive and Mac storage

I have 512GB storage on my Macbook Pro. It's almost full. I want to buy a less expensive Macbook Air with 256GB. If I turn on iCloud Drive on my old computer and wait for everything to sync to iCloud, can I then replace my old Pro with the new Air...or will I lose data?

If you purchase a smaller drive you'll find that it too fills quickly, especially if you have far more data in iCloud. iCloud is primarily a synchronization service, not offline storage. You would want to purchase a larger drive, or host your files on an external drive instead.
