2 iphones getting the same messages

Wife got and iphone X about 2 years ago and I took her (don't laugh) 5S. Everything was fine til about 2 months ago, maybe after an update when we started getting same texts from certain people. Both phones have same Apple ID, wasn't a problem before. First time it happened I believe was fixed by changes to the cloud. Now not sure how to fix. Was told only way to do it is a separate ID.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Apple recommends that each person in the family should have their own apple id to avoid clutter and avoiding the content getting mixed together.

You can try to sign out of the messages completely. In that case you won’t be able to use the imessage just normal green bubble texts. These walkarounds comes with consequences. Its better to erase the iphone and create yourself a new apple id, if you are using your wife’s apple id.
