Printing from webpages

I often have trouble when I try to print something from a website in Safari, for example a recipe. Most recipes have an option to print, which produces a printer-friendly version. But after getting there, it sometimes seems that no matter what i do—click on the trackpad of my MacBook Pro, click with a mouse, hit return—nothing happens; the print window for the printer will not open. Sometimes there's a delay, anywhere from a few minutes to hours, before the print window opens (I might leave the webpage open and notice hours later that the print window has finally appeared); at other times just give up. It can happen on any website; it's not limited to one cooking or gardening site, for example. I can print without any issues from Pages and probably from other apps (I don't normally print from apps like Contacts, Numbers, etc). This problem with printing from websites has only been happening for a few months, so perhaps it's linked to an update. I have workarounds, such as copying and pasting the text into a Pages document, or sometimes even typing the recipe (or other information) myself, if the formatting from copy/paste doesn't lend itself to a standard document and can't be changed. What's going on here? It's annoying that I'm being prevented from carrying out a basic function.

I understand attempting to print a webpage such as a recipe in Safari is resulting in a ridiculous delay, which does not happen with other apps.

I'm curious if it is the print "button" on a website causing that behaviour, or if you are using Safari's File > Print menu selection.

The Print icon within a website is programmed by the developer of the site. There is no standard on how this process works, some use javascript, others use HTML5, and even some will try to use a method that won't work on all devices. You can verify that you are allowing JavaScript by going to Safari > Settings > Security > Enable Javascript, but it most cases this is on already. I am not aware of an update that changed the behavior like you have mentioned.

Another workaround for you may be using the Shift-Command-4 key combination that allow you to draw a box around the content and save it as an image. You can then print this image or import into any document you want. The image is saved on your Desktop.
