Which adapter do I need to to connect a USB Superdrive to:
a. MacBook Pro Late 2017 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports
b. Model 2681 MacBook Air M2 with one Thunderbolt 4 port

you need either an USB-C to USB Adapter or an USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. some other manufacturer's adapters may work, but using a third party one will be a craps shoot as to wether or not they will work.

Note: The M2 MacBook Airs have Thunderbolt 3 ports – not Thunderbolt 4 ports. Thunderbolt 4 would imply that they support two USB-C / Thunderbolt displays, which they do not.
