So, I could never find the answer to this question either and had even asked friends how the heck do I unlock the phone when it's locked, in landscape mode (screen shows a clock and swiping any which way won't bring up the pin unlock screen), and when turning the phone upright to return to portrait orientation is inconvenient (as that seems to be the only way to unlock the phone--returning it to it's upright position to produce the unlock screen), but I finally found a workaround that doesn't require turning the phone's orientation into portrait mode.

To unlock the phone while it's in landscape orientation and when it would be inconvenient to rotate the phone's position to a portrait mode orientation (note that for me, my phone is only pin locked, no face ID unlock and I'm not sure if it will work with text passwords but presumably yes):

  • Swipe down from the top right-hand corner to bring down Control Center
  • Select any of the accessible apps (other than flashlight) available there, such as the calculator, camera, timer, stopwatch, or etc. so that it opens that app (which will appear on screen as if the phone were in a portrait mode orientation)
  • Then swipe in from the far right edge of the screen as if you had the phone in a portrait position and wanted to go to the home screen (to be sure, if your phone was not in landscape orientation, it would be equivalent to swiping up from the the bottom edge of the phone while in a portrait mode orientation) or swipe in from the far left if your landscape orientation is the other way around
  • Depending on your security setup, the Enter Passcode screen will appear to unlock the phone (however, unfortunately, it will be displayed as if the orientation was in portrait--which isn't a big deal if you have a numeric passcode, but for full text passcodes, you'd have to type it while viewing it sideways I'd assume, not yet tested).
  • But viola, your phone is unlocked without having to physically rotate it into portrait mode.

You would think with the recent slew of updates that address many people's frustrations, like organizing icons on the home screen, this would be one of those things--being able to unlock your phone while it's in landscape mode--but apparently not.

For those who might say or be thinking, "It's just a quick rotation of your phones orientation to unlock", I'd say, "well, yea of course, if you were just holding your phone" but I would guess that you've never used a phone holder and had the phone in landscape orientation in that holder and coming across a situation where you had to unlock your iPhone while it was in the holder in landscape orientation or you would know that in order to unlock your phone, you would have to remove it from the holder just to rotate it, unlock it, then place it back in the holder.

With an option to "Unlock to view photos" option available when swiping inward from the far left of the clock lock screen, it's clearly possible to display a passcode unlock screen for those using a pin (which is a necessary backup unlock option for those who use FaceID anyway), why isn't there a way to unlock the phone with passcode without putting the phone into a portrait mode orientation? Because it's assumed that you should always be able to easily rotate your device to unlock it in portrait mode despite being in the process of using it while it's in landscape mode?
