The compass app does not work it just is locked on North. I have turned phone off and on, deleted and reinstalled app no joy. Does this mean the internals that control this app are broken!

Remove the app, and then add it back,

1. Go Here: Delete Built-in Apple Apps from your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch - Apple Support
2. Scroll to: Delete a built-in app from your device
3. Proceed from there as necessary
4. Reinstall it here: Compass∞ on the App Store - Apple

Troubleshooting the Compass App:

I think it has simply stopped responding -Compass app, or not.

A. Start Here: If an App on your iPhone or iPad Stops Responding, Closes Unexpectedly, or won’t Open - Apple Support

B. Close All Apps:

Something is not responding. So, start with closing all apps. Hold you finger down as you swipe up from the bottom-left corner, to the top-right corner. Then, close all of these open apps, by swiping up quickly for each app.

Please try to restart the device by asking Siri “restart device” if that doesn’t work I have a few questions to help pinpoint the issue
