I if look at the requirements it should work. I just bought a new thunderbolt cable, I tried everything on this page. Why isn't it working?

The support article says that "the iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed." You can use the iMac running High Sierra as an extra display for the one running Catalina – but not the other way around.

The Command-F2 (or Command-Fn-F2) must be done on the iMac that is going to be the "display".

Thanks for your reply but I have tried everything on that page and yes I meet all the requirements. The iMac late 2013 is running on Catalina and the iMac mid 2011 is running on High Sierra. So the only thing possible is the cable not working? Or can you think of something else?
if it was me then I would use search and look for posts where people made it work, if you use filters int he upper left corner you can narrow down the search, and then try posting on the posts where they made it work and keep your fingers crossed that the people are still around to answer.

Check that the cable connecting the two is a Thunderbolt cable 1/2 cable, not a Mini DisplayPort one.
Yes very sure. Thunderbolt logo is on the cable as well.
The mid-2011 iMac (the one running High Sierra) is the one on which you are doing the Command-F2?

Yes first I tried it on both of them both it didn't work. Now, I don't know what changed but it works all of sudden.
I have 2 iMacs, I have one iMac mid 2011 and one iMac late 2013. I want to use one or the other as external display on the other.
