emptying the bin - stuck because of backupfolder

Hi Forum,

i'm stuck in my bin folder - I cant empty a folder called 'Bos Mac mini', which is from an earlier volumebackup HD.

It seems still to make backups inside the bin folder.

When trying to erase - it takes immensenly long time to calculate and ends with long text about locked files

deleting locked files in recycle bin I've been trying to empty my recycle bin for over a week and i'm extremely frustrated.. There seem to be locked files from deleted backup files (I didnt put there) but it takes forever to delete files then it ends saying there's a locked file. Can't delete because "some items may be locked" error? Is there a way to force my Mac to delete and empty the trash on massive folders? I have an old System folder backup and some old Time Machine backups from a long-gone iMac, for instance, that I need to delete to make space on my external drive. If I try to trash it, it claims it needs to "delete immediately" and has me provide my password, then it spends about 15-30 minutes with the "deleting" progress bar, counting off the literally one million or more items in the folder... then tells me it can't delete them and insists I check each item one at a time to find out if it's locked or in use! Obviously that's not possible. How do I just force these folders to delete and go away short of reformatting the entire drive?

Empyting the Trash where I dumped an entire unwanted Time Machine backup -- keep getting messages I cant because "the item is in use" Sorry for yet another Q.... I have two external drives with Time Machine (TM) backups. The older, 2 TB drive has two volumes on it, one with a ~5 year old Time Machine backup (that stopped working and no longer need it) and also a few VIP docs in folders. Other volume had bootable OS. Now I really need that 1 TB + of hard drive space. So I dragged Time Machine back-up to trash. I've been trying to empty the trash for almost 8 hours! And I'm only halfway through. Worst of all I keep getting error messages that "operation can't be completed because XXX is in use". Strangely these come in rapid succession, always starting with an old file/app "Quicken copy", then up the directory ladder to "Documents", my User "Name" folder, "Users", "Macintosh HD is in use", and then what looks like a Time Machine backup name with "Year-Month-Day-numeric" file name. I click "Continue" every time and I get the same string of messages over and over. I keep having to click "Continue" every few seconds. What to try next? Could Time Machine (which is turned off) somehow be "talking" to a relict back-up? Why would my OS care what is on that drive when docs/apps on it are open? Should I restart? If I disconnect the drive, but haven't emptied trash wont trash still be there? Saw this article on MacWorld about deleting stubborn items in the trash but it seems more relevant to internal, boot drive. Open System Settings > General > Time Machine. Select the backup drive and click the minus sign. That removes the drive from Time Machine. Once you do that, you can erase the drive using Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder.

FWIW, you should not try to manually delete files from a Time Machine backup drive. The best thing to do now is remove the drive from Time Machine Settings, erase the drive and start a new set of backups.

That's very helpful, but I'm not able to either erase or communicate with Time Machine-

its simply open a window like a widget and show my a time line in the right side.

im not able to do anything in that window
