We will assume that you enabled the Find My option on your phone......before.....it was lost.
If the phone does not appear on the Find My map, there are 2 reasons for this:
1) The battery has run down and/or
2) The phone does not have a connection to the Internet where it is currently located
There is really nothing that you can do about this other than check a few times each day to see if the status of the phone has changed.
If you see a message that the phone is "Offline", this means that Find My found the device previously, but it cannot connect at the present time......for the same 2 reasons listed above.
It is possible that Find My might display a "Last Known Location" if the phone was detected within the last 24 hours but is now "Offline".
Unfortunately, but realistically if you can't find the phone in the next few days, you will likely never find the phone, so you need to protect yourself.

FYI: “Last Location” generally only applies to a phone which transmits it’s location as it’s battery reaches “Critical Low.” (assuming that it has an available communications path to actually make the report)
Apple does NOT continuously track your device; it can’t tell you where you were.
Apple will only look for a device when “asked” to do so via the software tools provided. (or when “informed” by a “dying phone” as described above)
Hello, If you still don't see your iPhone in FINDER, make sure LOCATIONS > is showing all your disks connected. My mistake for 48 MINS, is in FINDER the LOCATIONS had the ARROW pointing to the right (>) instead of down.
My bad! Apple phone support found in seconds!

Thanks, but the OP was asking about locating the phone on the iCloud Find My map. That is different than the Finder on a Mac.
Sounds good - but when searching I came across this, so maybe it will help others.
