Is My Photo Stream a separate app then the Photos app, which automatically receives photos I take or copy from another source?

When MPS ends on July 26th we'll either have to use iCloud Photos to sync photos between mobile devices and Macs or use the iPhone's charging cable to connect the iPhone to our Macs and use either Photos or Image Capture to download new photos to our Macs Photos library.
