Data Transfer Cable and Transfer Information

I have a Late 21.5” 2009 Imac and I have a bought a used Retina 5k 27” 2020 Imac and I need to know what cable to buy for the transfer? I bought a usb-c to usb-c cable, but my 2009 doesn’t has a usb-c port. It has a fire wire port and 4 usb ports and 1 sd card slot?

Any help with the transfer would be welcome as well. I am hesitant about trying this on my own.

I am not that computer savvy.

Thank you!

Dianne

Hi Dianne!

You can use Migration Assistant to copy all of your documents, apps, user accounts, and settings to a new Mac from another computer. This process can usually be done wirelessly. Take a look at Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support.

However, if you have a Time Machine backup disk, it may be quicker to restore from it: Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support.

Hope this helps!

If you have a current backup of the Late 2009 iMac on an external drive that has a USB interface, the easiest thing to do might be to temporarily transfer that drive to the new Mac for doing the migration.

The backup can be either a Time Machine backup, or a bootable clone backup (made with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!). If the old drive has a USB-A cable (likely), you can get USB-C to USB-A adapters from Apple (and from other places like Amazon).
