Checklist for Migrating From Intel MacBook Pro to M2 MacBook Air?

Is there a checklist somewhere that spells out ALL the steps involved in migrating everything from a late 2016 Intel MacBook Pro to a new M2 MacBook Air?

I've found several tips on how to run Migration Assistant (I'll be using this app, but with a Thunderbolt cable connecting the two Macs rather than Time Machine or WiFi), but really no comprehensive checklist.

Ideally, the checklist would include things like:

  • Removing the old Mac from FindMe (Do this before or after migration?)
  • Removing the old Mac from subscription apps like Microsoft 365 and Photoshop Creative Cloud and their respective accounts.
  • Removing paired Bluetooth devices from the old Mac.
  • When and how to ensure apps like Office 365 and Photoshop are updated with Apple Silicon optimized versions. (Should they be deleted prior to running Migration Assistant, then re-download the Apple Silicon versions, or is this not necessary for those particular apps?)
  • Are the Apple apps (Pages, Numbers, etc.) automatically optimized for Apple Silicon, or will I need to delete/reinstall these?

My new MacBook Air will be arriving this week, and I'd like to get everything set up as quickly as possible.

Many thanks in advance for your help?

If you are planning on selling or giving away the old Mac, I wouldn’t recommend erasing/resetting it until after you have successfully done the migration AND have backups.

What version of macOS are you running now? If it's anything earlier than Catalina, you should check and see what 32-bit applications you are using now. (They won't work on the new machine).

To do that, select About This Mac in the Apple () menu, select System Report…, and select Applications. Wait for the Mac to compile the list, then click on the 64-bit (Intel) column header to sort by that field (and group all of the 32-bit applications together for easy identification).

If it is Catalina or later, you're already over the "end of 32-bit support" transition.

I'm sure that the Apple applications pre-installed on the Apple Silicon machine (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.) will be optimized for Apple Silicon. I don't think Migration Assistant will be dumb enough to overwrite them with old Intel-only versions from your previous machine.

I'm running Monterey (12.6.6).

It does appear that the primary apps I'm concerned about (Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, MS Word, Excel, OneNote, and 1Password) might already be optimized for Apple Silicon, as they show up as "Universal" in the column you mentioned.

Thanks.
