Siri selects wrong radio station

Whenever I want to play 'Radio Veronica' on my HomePod, Siri will play '192 Radio Veronica' which is a different radio station. I am able to select and stream it from TuneIn on my phone to the HomePod and every so often she decides to honour my request directly on the HomePod but most of the time she plays the wrong station.

Would it be very difficult to let me configure pre-set radio stations? Or block certain radio stations?

Also, I've read previous answers to the same question from other users. And yes, I have updated/restarted etc. And I use the full official name for the TuneIn station. And no, I cannot create a scene as that requires an Apple Music subscription.

Hey there EKlaassens,

If Siri and HomePod are using TuneIn Radio, it is most likely because the app is installed on your iPhone and has been used to listen to broadcast radio in the past.

Taking a look at Listen to the radio in the Apple Music app,

"Listen to broadcast radio

With the Apple Music app, you can tune in to your favorite broadcast radio stations, including your local ones.

  1. Go to Search.
  2. Search for the radio station by its name, call sign, frequency, or nickname.
  3. Tap or click the radio station to listen to it live.

You can also ask Siri to play a radio station.

Broadcast radio isn't available in all countries or regions."

Are you able to listen to the correct station, following these steps?

Have a good one!

Hi EKlaassens,

It looks like you're using a third-party app, TuneIn, when requesting Siri play a certain radio station.

If you ask Siri to play using the TuneIn app, then the radio station does that work better?

Or are you currently playing from the TuneIn app when the request is fulfilled correctly?

How about if you are using the Apple Music app and then asking for the radio station?

Or, not using either app and making the request. Siri should automatically use the Apple Music app, as that is the Apple product. Listen to the radio in the Apple Music app - Apple Support

Also, wondering if when you get the incorrect station, if it is because it's not available via Apple Music.

Give those situations a try, and see if you can isolate the issue further.

Thank you!

EKlaassens,

An Apple Music subscription is not necessary to listen to broadcast radio with the Music app, so please try with the steps above to see if you're able to listen to your radio channel as expected. Also, your HomePod will use its companion device to play audio. The following user guide elaborates: Play audio on HomePod using an iOS or iPadOS device - Apple Support

If you continue to experience issues, specifically with TuneIn, we recommend contacting the app developer directly. Here's how: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

Contact the developer of an iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS app
1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Search for the app, then tap it. If you can't find it, tap the account button  or your photo at the top of the screen, tap Purchased, tap "Not on this [device]," then tap the app.
3. The app's product page appears. Scroll to the Ratings & Reviews section, then tap App Support. If you don't see App Support, make sure that you're signed in with the correct Apple ID.

Best regards.

Hi mingoslkd, not sure how to respond to your answer.

I don't use a third party app, Apple decides to use TuneIn that's not me. Perhaps it is different in the US but over here in Europe when we ask for a radio station the HomePod will always use TuneIn.

When you say 'Apple will automatically use the Apple music app' I'm also confused. I didn't think I could use apps on the HomePod. I just ask it to play radio. Also, like I've mentioned in my question, I don't have an Apple Music subscription.

And when you say 'it's not available via Apple Music', that is not the case as it sometimes chooses the correct station.

I guess my beef with Siri is that there are bound to be many radio stations worldwide with similar or equal names. Because the HomePod can only be controlled through voice commands, how can I convince her to play the radio station that I want rather than some other station with the same name in Timbuktu.

Sorry Chris_C1, I don't know how else to put it. I'm not using TuneIn, that's Apple doing it. I certainly don't have an app called TuneIn.

About your second comment, I appreciate all of you going back to the Apple Music app. But the thing is, I'm using the HomePod through voice commands, I'm not using an app. And if I were it wouldn't work as I don't have an Apple Music subscription.

I know there are many more people struggling with this but from all the feedback I'm getting my feeling is that there are many more options in the US than in Europe. Help would be appreciated :-)

Drew_7’s Subscriptions - Apple Community

Hi Drew_7, I struggle to understand all of the above answers.

The reason is they all talk about apps. The thing is, I don’t use apps. I instruct the HomePod to play a radio station using my voice. No app can be installed on the HomePod as far as I know. Apps are not required. The HomePod can play radio stations without me having to resort to streaming it from my phone.

Perhaps my confusion can be addressed if someone could explain to me why everyone keeps talking about apps?
