cpu panic - unable to post event: what is wrong?

Hi, my 2022 macbook air m2 keeps crashing: purple screen, then automatically restart -- this can happen seconds after I log into my account after restart.

I thought I would be related to a VPN that I recently downloaded and used, yet after disintalling it, the problem keeps happening.

I am in the process of downloading MacOS Ventura 13.4. I will try to install it if my MacBook permits (because the restart will disrupt the download...). My current version is Monterey 12.4.

Can anyone tell me what is going on (hardware, or software?) and how I might fix the problem? Thank you!

Below is the part of the error codes that I get after the restart.

Looks like it may be firmware related.

You are behind on your Monterey updates so you may want to try updating to 12.6.6 to see if that makes any difference. It is usually not a good idea to upgrade to a new major version of the OS as that usually tends to cause more problems because it may introduce new software compatibility issues.

If updating to 12.6.6 doesn't help, then try a "Revive" which may reset the Mac's firmware...theoretically it should not affect the data, but make sure to have a good backup first just to be safe.

I've never seen this type of Kernel Panic before so I'm not sure what it may mean or if you only provided a snippet. There is always a small chance you may have some third party software installed which is interfering with the normal operation of macOS. Typical culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software...none of which are needed on a Mac.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

My MacBook Air M2 began doing pretty much the same exact thing two days ago, ONE day after the one-year warranty expired. I called Apple hoping they would have mercy on me and extend my warranty one day but they said "no dice". If anyone has suggestions on diagnosing this, please SHARE.

Attached is a sample of one of my many error reports. (I get a new one every time it freezes up and reboots, of course.)

Most likely the Logic Board is bad. However, you can try a few things just in case it is something else:

  • The last started extension was for the Paragon NTFS driver....maybe there is a problem with this software (outdated, or maybe the external drive has a problem). You can try booting into Safe Mode to see if you still have the issue. If Safe Mode works without any problems, then it is most likely a software issue, but some third party software may not work properly in Safe Mode if that software requires any extensions.
  • Disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.
  • Perform a firmware "Restore" and thoroughly test the laptop to see if it still has the problem. Make sure to test the laptop thoroughly before installing any third party software and before restoring from a backup. If the system fails with the firmware "Restore" while no third party apps and no restored backups, then it means you have a hardware issue of some sort.

Take the laptop to an Apple Store as they may decide to make a repair exception if the laptop is only a few days out of warranty. An Apple Authorized Service Provider won't be able to do make that decision, but the AASP tech can contact Apple to see if a repair exception can be made. Years ago this was not a problem, but these days it is much harder to have Apple make such an exception. If this fails, you can always try contacting Apple corporate to plead your case and voice your displeasure.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a detailed reply. After more hours of troubleshooting, I’m nearly certain it is the logic board. I also appreciate your advice on the warranty extension issue. It’s obviously totally on me that I didn’t do AppleCare (a mistake I will not make again), but that does not make the fact that this issue cropped up the very morning that my warranty expired any easier to swallow, of course.

Thanks again!

Thank you, HWTech, for your answer!

I ended up bringing my MacBook to a Genius Bar in Shanghai. I am still in my 1-year limited warranty period, and unfortunately, like exalky, I did not purchase AppleCare, which I regret deeply. The Genius Bar staff tried to help me purchase AppleCare (despite it is already more than one month after my purchase), but since I purchased the MacBook in the US, they weren't able to do it. I will try my luck when I am back in Chicago (if my MacBook can, hopefully, pass the diagnostic test).

As for the purple screen and "unable to post event" issue. The staff said they would reinstall the system for me first since it might be some third-party software that is causing the problem -- a vpn software, I suspect. (And my apologies for my possible misuse of terminologies -- I guess it is something like the firmware "restore" that HWTech mentioned. I had done backup on iCloud beforehand, and I needed to reinstall all the apps after the Genius Bar trip). Some half an hour after I dropped off my MacBook, I got a call from them to pick up my laptop. I didn't get to speak to a technician, but I suppose this was a sign that all is good now. Since the re-installment (which took place at the end of June), I have not experienced any similar issue.

I am sorry about your expired warranty situation, and I hope that restoring the computer might be a solution for you too, exalky!
