iMessage vs. MMS for a recipient on Android phone but who has an iPad

I am having trouble sending text messages from my iPhone to a friend. The friend uses an Android phone but also has an iPad (with an Apple account connected to their email address). I used to have no problem sending texts (with photos) to their cell phone but they sent me a one-off message using iMessage from their iPad and now when I send text messages to them they only go through iMessage to their iPad, not their cell phone. I'd like to go back to the way it was before, so they get my texts on their phone.

I know I can turn of iMessage and have all outgoing messages go through MMS but I don't want to lose iMessage features for other recipients.

Hello JoeMusician,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

If you tap on their name at the top of your conversation, does it show their iMessage email address, phone number, or both?

Are you able to start a new conversation thread and send messages to their phone number?

Testing that can help narrow down what may be happening here.

Additionally, please go over the steps in here and see if you notice any improvements: If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Hope this helps!
