Seems Apple requires a payment method be listed in your Apple Account for the first time you use the App Store or iTunes, even if you only download free items.

We are all Apple users, like yourself, in this Community, so likely no-one here knows why Apple does what it does. Fortunately, Apple does provide a lot of free software.

You may be able to use a gift-card as a payment method, if you do not want to use a credit card. That depends on which payment methods Apple can accept in your country or region (and also, what you are wanting to purchase / download).

NB: If you are using funds from a Gift Card, some purchases still do require a credit card on file, even if your Gift Card balance is used for the payment.
