venture 13.4 upgrade issues to desktop files

After upgrading, a host of issues related to existing desktop files:

Quickview not working on desktop for any file type

File image not displaying correctly

Files won’t open when clicked (all file types)

Can’t move (drag n’ drop) files off desktop into a folder - they get stuck ‘preparing to move’

Can’t put files on desktop into the trash or delete them - they get stuck ‘moving to trash’

In other words, the files (but not folders) on my desktop are now useless, but I can’t move or trash them either.

Oh, and TextEdit won’t open (endless spinning rainbow).

I’ve restarted Finder a few times, restarted the computer as well. Nothing works in that way.

Any ideas of what the core issue is?

I would start by force quitting the TextEdit.app if you are stuck...

>Force Quit>Text Edit

A SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc., third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

If you still have a problem—

I would run the Disk Utility First Aid, this is best done from Internet Recovery (Option Command R) on booting and see if there is a issue to resolve—

Boot into Internet Recovery (Option Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey/Ventura) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices The best sequence is —

Volume level

Container level

Parent drive

If no insight you can try reinstalling the macOS on top of your existing macOS
