Why do i need itunes to get apple tv on an Amazon Fire Stick?
I am about to give up on this app.

You don't. You can download the Apple TV app from Amazon. I haven't done that myself but I have done the similar thing using a Roku instead of Fire Stick and did not need iTunes to do it.
