Nicknames

Sometime back suddenly I have nicknames in all of my contacts. It is the intials of each contact. I.e John Doe will have a nickname “J.D.”

The ridiculousness of this is that I may have 10 contacts with J and D as the first letter of their names so all have same nickname “J.D.”

I turned off using short name so now the contacts show in lists as normal names how ever I want to delete all the nicknames that auto created in my many thousands of contacts. I know you can delete each individually but that would take weeks! I need a solution to clear all nicknames or preferably just delete the field or all data on the field at minimum. Please offer guidance.

I understand that contacts are connected to accounts. I am not referring to the initials on left.

I did not add”nicknames” to all my contacts. Somehow stupid Apple turned this on and automatically created these for all my contacts. I want to delete all nicknames at once for all contacts ! The whole field even is ok with me I don’t need it it’s useless

When you look deeply you will find that Contacts are neither stored on an iPhone nor on SIM. They are synced to an email account that you may have added and enabled Contacts. It could be Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other email client server.

When you enable Contacts in any of the email accounts they are displayed to you through the Contacts App. When you edit these contacts on an iPhone they are ultimately edited on the client-server.
