iPhoto has auto cropped older photos in my roll

I’m have discovered that iPhoto has cropped some older photos of mine. The thumbnail in the roll shows the full image but when I select the image it has been cropped it to a landscape. The image cannot be reverted however when I apply a small edit the full image is restored. Is this a feature of iCloud and minimizing storage? Is there away to remove this feature or is it a bug? Luckily my photos a safe but I’ve never seen this before.

I have the exact same problem.


Looking at some older pictures on my phone (taken back in 2016 with an iPhone 5s) in the "All Photos" view with "Square Photo Grid" mode, all images look fine. However when switch to "Aspect Ratio Grid" mode, some of the images are cropped. To be more specific, it looks like images taken in the portrait orientation are cropped to landscape orientation, i.e. the top and bottom portion are cropped.


The image itself is fine, as I can see the original/full image if I go into Edit mode. Another option is to use the duplicate function. The new duplicate image is shown in the "All Photos" view in its original form without the cropping.


Looks to be a bug to me.
